Flying rules for Pottsville and surrounds

  1. Compliance with SAFA Regulations
    All pilots must be familiar with and strictly follow the rules outlined in the SAFA Operations Manual.

  2. Incident Reporting
    Any accidents or incidents must be reported to SAFA in accordance with the procedures described in the Operations Manual.

  3. Licensing and Communication Requirements
    For safety, all pilots must hold a valid license and carry an operational VHF radio at all times during flight.

  4. VHF Radio Use – Mandatory Zones
    When flying north from Cabarita Beach toward Kingscliff, a VHF radio is compulsory. Please monitor and transmit on Channel 119.

  5. Controlled Airspace – Altitude Limitations
    Between Pottsville and Kingscliff, aircraft must remain below 1500 feet to avoid entering Class C airspace.

  6. Flying Over Populated Areas
    Always remain over water when flying near populated areas. This includes, but is not limited to:

    • Pottsville

    • Brunswick Heads

    • Byron Bay

  7. Tyagarah Airstrip – Low Flying Aircraft Warning
    If flying between Brunswick Heads and Byron Bay, be aware that aircraft take off from Tyagarah Airstrip heading northeast and fly low along the beach. Maintain low altitude and exercise extreme caution in this area.
